“The thing that makes you exceptional, if you are at all, is inevitably that which must also make you lonely.”
- Lorraine hansberry

your name is everything.  The year is 1994… and guiliani’s just swept into the mayor’s office, primarily on the strength of a solemn promise to clean up the big apple.  Graffiti writers, once a celebrated part of the underground, suddenly find themselves doggedly pursued by the vandal squad and generally regarded as the poster children for all things urban blight.

enter shayla johns.  at 17, she is on the verge of doing what few graff writers before her have ever accomplished: going all city, getting up in every borough.  under the alias ‘bug’ she has grown to near legendary status in the graff world, though few know her by face.  her rise has not gone unnoticed though.  Having made her way to the top of the vandal squad’s wish list, she is finally caught the night before her 18th birthday, and given a clear choice from the powers that be: stop writing graffiti, or face certain jail time as an adult.

abandoned by her best friend, challenged by a violent and bitter rival and facing jail time, shayla summons up the courage to go it alone and finish a piece that might be her greatest work yet.  but will her decision cost her everything?  a look into the hidden world of the graffiti girl, tags is at once a tribute to an artform and a story about finding yourself in the things you love.
